Moving house in Coleraine: clearance, cleaning and flat-pack in one week

Moving is stressful enough. Here is a simple one-week plan for clearing out, cleaning and getting furniture built, with local help where you need it.

Whether you are moving between houses in Coleraine, leaving a student let near the university, or downsizing, the last week is always busy. Splitting the work into stages and booking help early takes a lot of the pressure off.

Seven days before: clear out

  • Go room by room and sort into keep, donate, sell and dump.
  • Book house clearance early for anything large, such as old furniture or a garage full of boxes.
  • Check where clearance items will go. A responsible provider should be registered to carry waste.

Four or five days before: repairs and touch-ups

  • Fill holes from pictures and shelves, and touch up paint.
  • Fix anything your landlord or buyer has asked for.
  • Post the small jobs together so one person can do them in a single visit.

Two days before: cleaning

  • Book an end-of-tenancy or moving-out clean, especially if you rent.
  • Tell the cleaner what condition the property is in and what your landlord expects.
  • Agree whether they bring products and equipment.

The day before: final checks

  • Take meter readings for electricity, oil or gas, and water, with a photo of each.
  • Check every cupboard, the loft and the shed for anything left behind.
  • Gather keys, fobs and alarm codes for the new owner or landlord.
  • Pack a box of essentials for the first night: kettle, mugs, phone chargers, toilet roll, bedding and basic tools.

Moving day and after: flat-pack and fitting

  • Book flat-pack assembly for the day after you move, when the boxes are in the right rooms.
  • Keep instructions and fittings together for each item.
  • Ask for tall furniture to be secured to the wall, using fixings suited to your walls.

If you are renting

Check your tenancy agreement for what the landlord expects at the end, such as professional cleaning, garden tidying or filling holes. Doing these properly is often the difference between getting your deposit back in full or not. Keep receipts for any work you pay for.

If you are selling or buying

Small repairs and a deep clean before viewings can make a real difference. After you move in, the first week is a good time to sort the jobs you noticed during viewings, such as sticking doors, dripping taps or a garden that needs a tidy.

Settling in

Once you are in, keep a list of the small jobs that come up in the first month. There are always a few. Posting them together on WeeJobs means one local person can often sort several in a single visit, which saves you time.

Getting help at short notice

Moves do not always go to plan. If a completion date moves or a clean takes longer than expected, posting the job with clear timing gives local people the best chance to help. Say exactly when you need it done and how flexible you can be.

Booking it all on WeeJobs

You can post each job separately in the WeeJobs app: clearance, cleaning, small repairs and flat-pack. Approved local people who cover Coleraine can let you know they are interested, and you choose who suits each job.
