Most homes have a list of small jobs that never quite get done: a shelf to put up, a door that drags, a fence panel that blew down in the last storm. They are too small to call a big firm about, but you still want them done properly by someone who turns up when they say they will.
Here is how I would go about finding a reliable handyman around Coleraine, Ballymoney, Portrush and the rest of the Causeway Coast.
Be clear about the job first
The more specific you are, the easier it is for the right person to say yes. Write down each task, roughly where it is and anything that might affect it, such as the wall type for shelves, or whether you already have the parts. Photos help more than you would think.
If you have several small jobs, list them together. Many handymen would rather do three small jobs in one visit than one job across town.
What makes a handyman reliable
- They ask questions. Someone who asks about access, materials and timing is thinking about doing the job properly.
- They are clear about price. Whether they charge a fixed price or by the hour, you should know which before they start.
- They are honest about limits. A good handyman will tell you when something needs a specialist, such as electrical, gas or structural work.
- They communicate. Replies when they say they will, and lets you know if they are running late.
Questions to ask before you agree
- Is this a fixed price or hourly? If hourly, roughly how long do you expect it to take?
- Does the price include materials, or will they be extra?
- Have you done this kind of job before?
- When can you start, and how long will it take?
- Is there anything I need to do or buy before you arrive?
Red flags to watch for
- They want to start without agreeing what the job includes.
- The price changes once they arrive, with no explanation.
- They are vague about whether materials are included.
- They are happy to take on gas, electrical or structural work without the right qualifications.
None of these mean someone is dishonest, but they are good reasons to ask more questions before you go ahead.
Keep a good one
When you find a handyman you trust, keep their details. Plenty of people on the Causeway Coast use the same person for years, for everything from a dripping tap to a new shelf. On WeeJobs you can look up who did previous jobs for you, and leaving a review after the work helps them, and helps other people nearby find them.
Using WeeJobs to find local help
WeeJobs was built for exactly these jobs. You post your job free, with photos and your area, and approved local tradespeople and helpers who cover that area can let you know they are interested. You can look at their profiles, message them and choose who suits you. You are never obliged to go ahead.
Getting a quote is free and does not require a card. Some jobs use a deposit at booking and a balance when the work is done. Others use a saved card, with nothing charged at booking and payment when the job is done. For a fixed-price job, review the quote before accepting it. For hourly work, review the estimate and the later bill for the actual work. The app tells you which payment flow applies.
